Copies a point-in-time snapshot of an EBS volume and stores it in Amazon S3. You can copy a snapshot within the same Region, from one Region to another, or from a Region to an Outpost. You can’t copy a snapshot from an Outpost to a Region, from one Outpost to another, or within the same Outpost.
You can use the snapshot to create EBS volumes or Amazon Machine Images (AMIs).
When copying snapshots to a Region, copies of encrypted EBS snapshots remain encrypted. Copies of unencrypted snapshots remain unencrypted, unless you enable encryption for the snapshot copy operation. By default, encrypted snapshot copies use the default Key Management Service (KMS) KMS key; however, you can specify a different KMS key. To copy an encrypted snapshot that has been shared from another account, you must have permissions for the KMS key used to encrypt the snapshot.
Snapshots copied to an Outpost are encrypted by default using the default encryption key for the Region, or a different key that you specify in the request using KmsKeyId . Outposts do not support unencrypted snapshots. For more information, Amazon EBS local snapshots on Outposts in the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud User Guide .
Snapshots created by copying another snapshot have an arbitrary volume ID that should not be used for any purpose.
For more information, see Copy an Amazon EBS snapshot in the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud User Guide .

--description
(string)
A description for the EBS snapshot.
--destination-outpost-arn
(string)
The Amazon Resource Name (ARN) of the Outpost to which to copy the snapshot. Only specify this parameter when copying a snapshot from an Amazon Web Services Region to an Outpost. The snapshot must be in the Region for the destination Outpost. You cannot copy a snapshot from an Outpost to a Region, from one Outpost to another, or within the same Outpost.
For more information, see Copy snapshots from an Amazon Web Services Region to an Outpost in the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud User Guide .
--destination-region
(string)
The destination Region to use in the
PresignedUrl
parameter of a snapshot copy operation. This parameter is only valid for specifying the destination Region in aPresignedUrl
parameter, where it is required. The snapshot copy is sent to the regional endpoint that you sent the HTTP request to (for example,
ec2.us-east-1.amazonaws.com
). With the CLI, this is specified using the--region
parameter or the default Region in your Amazon Web Services configuration file.
--encrypted
| --no-encrypted
(boolean)
To encrypt a copy of an unencrypted snapshot if encryption by default is not enabled, enable encryption using this parameter. Otherwise, omit this parameter. Encrypted snapshots are encrypted, even if you omit this parameter and encryption by default is not enabled. You cannot set this parameter to false. For more information, see Amazon EBS encryption in the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud User Guide .
--kms-key-id
(string)
The identifier of the Key Management Service (KMS) KMS key to use for Amazon EBS encryption. If this parameter is not specified, your KMS key for Amazon EBS is used. If
KmsKeyId
is specified, the encrypted state must betrue
.You can specify the KMS key using any of the following:
Key ID. For example, 1234abcd-12ab-34cd-56ef-1234567890ab.
Key alias. For example, alias/ExampleAlias.
Key ARN. For example, arn:aws:kms:us-east-1:012345678910:key/1234abcd-12ab-34cd-56ef-1234567890ab.
Alias ARN. For example, arn:aws:kms:us-east-1:012345678910:alias/ExampleAlias.
Amazon Web Services authenticates the KMS key asynchronously. Therefore, if you specify an ID, alias, or ARN that is not valid, the action can appear to complete, but eventually fails.
--presigned-url
(string)
When you copy an encrypted source snapshot using the Amazon EC2 Query API, you must supply a pre-signed URL. This parameter is optional for unencrypted snapshots. For more information, see Query requests .
The
PresignedUrl
should use the snapshot source endpoint, theCopySnapshot
action, and include theSourceRegion
,SourceSnapshotId
, andDestinationRegion
parameters. ThePresignedUrl
must be signed using Amazon Web Services Signature Version 4. Because EBS snapshots are stored in Amazon S3, the signing algorithm for this parameter uses the same logic that is described in Authenticating Requests: Using Query Parameters (Amazon Web Services Signature Version 4) in the Amazon Simple Storage Service API Reference . An invalid or improperly signedPresignedUrl
will cause the copy operation to fail asynchronously, and the snapshot will move to anerror
state.
--source-region
(string)
The ID of the Region that contains the snapshot to be copied.
--source-snapshot-id
(string)
The ID of the EBS snapshot to copy.
--tag-specifications
(list)
The tags to apply to the new snapshot.
(structure)
The tags to apply to a resource when the resource is being created.
Note
The
Valid Values
lists all the resource types that can be tagged. However, the action you’re using might not support tagging all of these resource types. If you try to tag a resource type that is unsupported for the action you’re using, you’ll get an error.ResourceType -> (string)
The type of resource to tag on creation.
Tags -> (list)
The tags to apply to the resource.
(structure)
Describes a tag.
Key -> (string)
The key of the tag.
Constraints: Tag keys are case-sensitive and accept a maximum of 127 Unicode characters. May not begin with
aws:
.Value -> (string)
The value of the tag.
Constraints: Tag values are case-sensitive and accept a maximum of 256 Unicode characters.

--dry-run
|--no-dry-run
(boolean)Checks whether you have the required permissions for the action, without actually making the request, and provides an error response. If you have the required permissions, the error response is
DryRunOperation
. Otherwise, it isUnauthorizedOperation
.
--cli-input-json
|--cli-input-yaml
(string) Reads arguments from the JSON string provided. The JSON string follows the format provided by--generate-cli-skeleton
. If other arguments are provided on the command line, those values will override the JSON-provided values. It is not possible to pass arbitrary binary values using a JSON-provided value as the string will be taken literally. This may not be specified along with--cli-input-yaml
.
--generate-cli-skeleton
(string) Prints a JSON skeleton to standard output without sending an API request. If provided with no value or the valueinput
, prints a sample input JSON that can be used as an argument for--cli-input-json
. Similarly, if providedyaml-input
it will print a sample input YAML that can be used with--cli-input-yaml
. If provided with the valueoutput
, it validates the command inputs and returns a sample output JSON for that command. The generated JSON skeleton is not stable between versions of the AWS CLI and there are no backwards compatibility guarantees in the JSON skeleton generated.Global Options¶
--debug
(boolean)Turn on debug logging.
--endpoint-url
(string)Override command’s default URL with the given URL.
--no-verify-ssl
(boolean)By default, the AWS CLI uses SSL when communicating with AWS services. For each SSL connection, the AWS CLI will verify SSL certificates. This option overrides the default behavior of verifying SSL certificates.
--no-paginate
(boolean)Disable automatic pagination.
--output
(string)The formatting style for command output.
json
text
table
yaml
yaml-stream
--query
(string)A JMESPath query to use in filtering the response data.
--profile
(string)Use a specific profile from your credential file.
--region
(string)The region to use. Overrides config/env settings.
--version
(string)Display the version of this tool.
--color
(string)Turn on/off color output.
on
off
auto
--no-sign-request
(boolean)Do not sign requests. Credentials will not be loaded if this argument is provided.
--ca-bundle
(string)The CA certificate bundle to use when verifying SSL certificates. Overrides config/env settings.
--cli-read-timeout
(int)The maximum socket read time in seconds. If the value is set to 0, the socket read will be blocking and not timeout. The default value is 60 seconds.
--cli-connect-timeout
(int)The maximum socket connect time in seconds. If the value is set to 0, the socket connect will be blocking and not timeout. The default value is 60 seconds.
--cli-binary-format
(string)The formatting style to be used for binary blobs. The default format is base64. The base64 format expects binary blobs to be provided as a base64 encoded string. The raw-in-base64-out format preserves compatibility with AWS CLI V1 behavior and binary values must be passed literally. When providing contents from a file that map to a binary blob
fileb://
will always be treated as binary and use the file contents directly regardless of thecli-binary-format
setting. When usingfile://
the file contents will need to properly formatted for the configuredcli-binary-format
.
base64
raw-in-base64-out
--no-cli-pager
(boolean)Disable cli pager for output.
--cli-auto-prompt
(boolean)Automatically prompt for CLI input parameters.
--no-cli-auto-prompt
(boolean)Disable automatically prompt for CLI input parameters.
Examples¶
Note
To use the following examples, you must have the AWS CLI installed and configured. See the Getting started guide in the AWS CLI User Guide for more information.
Unless otherwise stated, all examples have unix-like quotation rules. These examples will need to be adapted to your terminal’s quoting rules. See Using quotation marks with strings in the AWS CLI User Guide .
Example 1: To copy a snapshot to another Region
The following
copy-snapshot
example command copies the specified snapshot from theus-west-2
