Composes an email message and immediately queues it for sending.
This operation is more flexible than the SendEmail
operation. When you use the SendRawEmail
operation, you can specify the headers of the message as well as its content. This flexibility is useful, for example, when you need to send a multipart MIME email (such a message that contains both a text and an HTML version). You can also use this operation to send messages that include attachments.
The SendRawEmail

If you only specify the SourceIdentityArn
parameter, Amazon SES sets the From and Return-Path addresses to the same identity that you specified.

The identity’s email address. If you do not provide a value for this parameter, you must specify a “From” address in the raw text of the message. (You can also specify both.)
Note
Amazon SES does not support the SMTPUTF8 extension, as described in`RFC6531 <https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc6531>`__ . For this reason, the email address string must be 7-bit ASCII. If you want to send to or from email addresses that contain Unicode characters in the domain part of an address, you must encode the domain using Punycode. Punycode is not permitted in the local part of the email address (the part before the @ sign) nor in the “friendly from” name. If you want to use Unicode characters in the “friendly from” name, you must encode the “friendly from” name using MIME encoded-word syntax, as described in Sending raw email using the Amazon SES API . For more information about Punycode, see RFC 3492 .If you specify the
Source
parameter and have feedback forwarding enabled, then bounces and complaints are sent to this email address. This takes precedence over any Return-Path header that you might include in the raw text of the message.
--destinations

A list of destinations for the message, consisting of To:, CC:, and BCC: addresses.

The raw email message itself. The message has to meet the following criteria:
- The message has to contain a header and a body, separated by a blank line.
- All of the required header fields must be present in the message.
- Each part of a multipart MIME message must be formatted properly.
- Attachments must be of a content type that Amazon SES supports. For a list on unsupported content types, see Unsupported Attachment Types in the Amazon SES Developer Guide .
- The entire message must be base64-encoded.
- If any of the MIME parts in your message contain content that is outside of the 7-bit ASCII character range, we highly recommend that you encode that content. For more information, see Sending Raw Email in the Amazon SES Developer Guide .
- Per RFC 5321 , the maximum length of each line of text, including the <CRLF>, must not exceed 1,000 characters.
Data -> (blob)
The raw data of the message. This data needs to base64-encoded if you are accessing Amazon SES directly through the HTTPS interface. If you are accessing Amazon SES using an Amazon Web Services SDK, the SDK takes care of the base 64-encoding for you. In all cases, the client must ensure that the message format complies with Internet email standards regarding email header fields, MIME types, and MIME encoding.
The To:, CC:, and BCC: headers in the raw message can contain a group list.
If you are using
SendRawEmail
with sending authorization, you can include X-headers in the raw message to specify the “Source,” “From,” and “Return-Path” addresses. For more information, see the documentation forSendRawEmail

--cli-input-json

Reads arguments from the JSON string provided. The JSON string follows the format provided by --generate-cli-skeleton
. If other arguments are provided on the command line, those values will override the JSON-provided values. It is not possible to pass arbitrary binary values using a JSON-provided value as the string will be taken literally. This may not be specified along with --cli-input-yaml
.
--generate-cli-skeleton
(string)
Prints a JSON skeleton to standard output without sending an API request. If provided with no value or the value input
, prints a sample input JSON that can be used as an argument for --cli-input-json
. Similarly, if provided yaml-input
it will print a sample input YAML that can be used with --cli-input-yaml
. If provided with the value output
, it validates the command inputs and returns a sample output JSON for that command. The generated JSON skeleton is not stable between versions of the AWS CLI and there are no backwards compatibility guarantees in the JSON skeleton generated.
--debug
(boolean)
Turn on debug logging.
--endpoint-url
(string)
Override command’s default URL with the given URL.
--no-verify-ssl
(boolean)
By default, the AWS CLI uses SSL when communicating with AWS services. For each SSL connection, the AWS CLI will verify SSL certificates. This option overrides the default behavior of verifying SSL certificates.
--no-paginate
(boolean)
Disable automatic pagination. If automatic pagination is disabled, the AWS CLI will only make one call, for the first page of results.
--output
(string)
The formatting style for command output.
--query
(string)
A JMESPath query to use in filtering the response data.
--profile
(string)
Use a specific profile from your credential file.
--region
(string)
The region to use. Overrides config/env settings.
--version
(string)
Display the version of this tool.
--color
(string)
Turn on/off color output.
--no-sign-request
(boolean)
Do not sign requests. Credentials will not be loaded if this argument is provided.
--ca-bundle
(string)
The CA certificate bundle to use when verifying SSL certificates. Overrides config/env settings.
--cli-read-timeout
(int)
The maximum socket read time in seconds. If the value is set to 0, the socket read will be blocking and not timeout. The default value is 60 seconds.
--cli-connect-timeout
(int)
The maximum socket connect time in seconds. If the value is set to 0, the socket connect will be blocking and not timeout. The default value is 60 seconds.
--cli-binary-format
(string)
The formatting style to be used for binary blobs. The default format is base64. The base64 format expects binary blobs to be provided as a base64 encoded string. The raw-in-base64-out format preserves compatibility with AWS CLI V1 behavior and binary values must be passed literally. When providing contents from a file that map to a binary blob fileb://
will always be treated as binary and use the file contents directly regardless of the cli-binary-format
setting. When using file://
the file contents will need to properly formatted for the configured cli-binary-format
.
--no-cli-pager
(boolean)
Disable cli pager for output.
--cli-auto-prompt
(boolean)
Automatically prompt for CLI input parameters.
--no-cli-auto-prompt
(boolean)
Disable automatically prompt for CLI input parameters.
To use the following examples, you must have the AWS CLI installed and configured. See the Getting started guide in the AWS CLI User Guide for more information.
Unless otherwise stated, all examples have unix-like quotation rules. These examples will need to be adapted to your terminal’s quoting rules. See Using quotation marks with strings in the AWS CLI User Guide .
To send a raw email using Amazon SES
The following example uses the send-raw-email
command to send an email with a TXT attachment:

The raw message is a JSON data structure saved in a file named message.json
in the current directory. It contains the following:

As you can see, “Data” is one long string that contains the entire raw email content in MIME format, including an attachment called attachment.txt.
Replace sender@example.com and recipient@example.com with the addresses you want to use. Note that the sender’s email address must be verified with Amazon SES. Until you are granted production access to Amazon SES, you must also verify the email address of the recipient unless the recipient is the Amazon SES mailbox simulator. The Message ID in the output indicates that the call to send-raw-email was successful.
